LaRochelle’s current reality is defined by a transparent tent installed in the center of his hospital room. He spends his days reading, working on his computer, and speaking with his wife and three children via Zoom to mark their sixteenth anniversary. While he has access to basic amenities, he remains separated from the outside world by layers of plastic and negative pressure chambers. The window to the city is a distant sight, kept out of reach to ensure no breach in the strict containment protocol.
The Infectious Diseases Clinic at Bulovka is one of only two facilities in the Czech Republic equipped to handle such a high-risk patient. Medical staff must navigate a complex, twenty-minute dressing procedure involving airtight suits and powered air-purifying units before entering the biobox. Every interaction is calculated to prevent any potential contamination, and leaving the room requires a mandatory ten-minute chemical decontamination shower followed by a waiting period. All waste, including biological materials, is incinerated immediately to eliminate any risk of viral escape. Despite the gravity of his situation, LaRochelle remains asymptomatic and in good spirits, expressing gratitude for the care provided by the Czech medical team as he waits to see if the disease will manifest.
