The stark disparity highlights a global decline in humanitarian aid, with total worldwide resettlement numbers plummeting by 50 percent to 81,800. Kelly Clements, deputy head of the UN refugee agency, warned that nearly three million people remain in urgent need of relocation. During a briefing in Brussels, Clements urged European nations to increase their commitments, noting that refugees typically integrate as productive members of their host communities.
While France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK lead European efforts, the collective outlook remains bleak. EU states resettled fewer than 12,000 refugees in 2024, with future projections trending downward. Current pledges from nine member states account for only 10,000 people spread over the next two years, reflecting a broader political backlash against migration and asylum policies on both sides of the Atlantic.
