Weis Markets Deploys Instacart AI Carts to Streamline Grocery Aisles

Pennsylvania-based Weis Markets is integrating Instacart’s Caper Carts into select locations, replacing traditional shopping experiences with AI-driven touchscreens and real-time item recognition. The rollout marks a significant shift in how customers interact with loyalty programs, digital coupons, and spending trackers while physically navigating the grocery store aisles.

The smart carts utilize a combination of basket-facing sensors, outward-facing cameras, and certified scales to identify items the moment they are placed inside. Powered by cloud AI trained on over 1.6 billion online grocery orders, the technology allows shoppers to monitor their total spend and access personalized coupons directly from the cart’s interface. Greg Zeh, senior vice president and chief information officer at Weis Markets, noted that the initiative aims to simplify the shopping process by bridging the gap between digital rewards and in-store convenience.

Beyond the Caper Carts, Weis is aggressively expanding its AI footprint to include checkout security. The chain recently completed a deployment of the Toshiba ELERA Security Suite across all 199 of its locations. This system focuses on produce recognition and loss prevention, with internal data indicating that over 94% of customers utilize the automated produce identification tool. These moves reflect a broader industry trend toward digitizing the physical retail environment, as seen with competitors like Albertsons, which recently implemented in-house computer vision tools to automate quality control for produce shipments.
