The transition away from custom-built legacy ERP systems marks a strategic pivot for the utility provider. By rejecting fragmented software in favor of standardized, in-memory database architecture, E.ON has stabilized its energy network while creating the high-speed data processing environment necessary for machine learning. CIO Sebastian Weber emphasizes that internal readiness is the primary hurdle, forcing the company to bridge the gap between consumer-grade AI expectations and robust enterprise stability.

To support this, E.ON has aggressively recruited over 1,000 specialists, including 500 data experts and 300 cybersecurity professionals. This shift toward internal ownership allows for rigorous governance and the creation of proprietary data lakes, ensuring that operational technology remains secure. The company has moved away from isolated innovation labs, instead mandating that all new tools be integrated directly into core production environments through a BizDevOps model. This ensures that every software deployment is tied to specific commercial outcomes, such as predictive maintenance algorithms that dispatch repair crews before hardware failures occur across the 47-million-user network.
